Seven MDU research projects rank high on the list of engineering and technology in the service of humanity

Recently The Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA) presented this year's list of research projects in Sweden which are deemed to have enormous potential to benefit society. The focus of this year’s list of 100 projects is on technology in the service of humanity. Seven of the research projects on this year's list come from or are linked to MDU.

The following research projects which are from or related to MDU can be found on IVA's 2022 list:

• Recreate: Strategies and areas of application for reusing spent electric vehicle batteries. External link.
  
  
• SpaceCloud: Radiation-proof server solutions for precision farming and water optimisation from cloud services in space. External link.
  
  
• HyCoGen: a system perspective for the efficient production and use of hydrogen via a link to district heating. External link.
  
  
• Hecarrus – a project which focuses on engineering for small electric hybrid aircraft with room for up to 19 passengers. External link.
  
  
• ESS-H+: Research profile in sensor systems for health monitoring and disease prevention. External link.
  
  
• AI-expert för smart service.
  
  
• SOLVE: Collaborative project with a view to enable a rapid and sustainable expansion of solar energy in Sweden. External link.
  
  

Fredrik Bruhn, adjunct professor at MDU and co-founder of the company Unibap that acts to commercialise SpaceCloud in industry, says this about the nomination:

“The nomination is of course a great honour, but the best thing is that this year's list highlights the benefits of research, i.e. why it is important for us to be an innovation nation and that we can create research results that attract some of the world's largest companies.”

Focus is on technology in the service of humanity

This year's list of 100 research projects highlights those which ensure that new and upcoming innovations do not threaten but enable better management and distribution of the Earth's limited resources, increased sustainability and circularity, greater equality, democracy, security, health and wellbeing for all humanity. The 70 research projects were selected in a thorough nomination and selection process based on several defined criteria to create value for business and society.

About the 100 List

The 100 List is produced by the Research2Business, (R2B) the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences’ project, which aims to promote Sweden as a leader by transforming academic research, in the engineering and economic sciences into innovation and competitiveness in the private sector. IVA's 100 List was launched in conjunction with the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA)’s 100th anniversary in 2019, hence the name. The selection committee consists of around 40 qualified people from IVA's broad network of representatives from academia and the private and public sector. The project is run in cooperation with Vinnova, the Swedish Patent and Registration Office (PRV), the Association of Swedish Engineering Industries, the Confederation of Swedish Enterprise, the Knowledge Foundation, Almi and Sweden’s universities.
